The CVT — Continuously Variable Transmission — replaced the traditional automatic in millions of vehicles sold between 2010 and 2024. Nissan, Subaru, Honda, and many others switched to CVT transmissions during this period. The reasons were practical: better fuel economy, smoother acceleration, and lower manufacturing cost.
The problem is what happens when they fail.
A conventional automatic transmission can often be rebuilt by a transmission specialist for $1,500–2,500. The parts are standardized, the repair procedures are documented, and most transmission shops have rebuilt hundreds of them. The failure modes are predictable and the replacement timeline is measured.
A CVT replacement is a different story. CVT units are largely proprietary. Nissan CVTs, for example, are not interchangeable with Honda CVTs. The rebuild industry for CVTs is thin compared to conventional automatics. In many markets, a CVT failure means a dealership replacement — which runs $3,500–5,000 or more. And unlike conventional automatics, CVT failures in high-mileage vehicles are often not repairable at all; the whole unit must be replaced.
Which vehicles have CVT transmissions? Nissan has been the most aggressive CVT adopter — virtually every Nissan sold since 2012 uses a CVT, including the Rogue, Altima, Sentra, Murano, and Pathfinder. Subaru uses a CVT in the Crosstrek, Impreza, and Legacy (though older boxer engine Subarus used conventional automatics). Honda uses CVTs in the Fit, HR-V, and certain Accord configurations. Jeep used a CVT in some Cherokee configurations during this period.
How to evaluate CVT risk: CVT vehicles are not automatically bad purchases. A well-maintained CVT with fresh fluid at regular intervals (every 30,000–40,000 miles) can last 150,000+ miles. The risk increases sharply when: (1) the transmission fluid has never been changed, (2) the vehicle has been towed with the transmission in drive, or (3) the vehicle shows any shuddering, hesitation, or jerking during acceleration.
